Land & Housing Redistribution
Working with the Development Action Group and Anzabeth Tonkin, I produced the following series about how to undo apartheid planning for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). Each of these issues shows how medium-density housing on inner-city land could be provided to poor South Africans. In so doing, these publications advocate for concrete strategies to un-plan the racial and spatial segregation violently enforced by the apartheid state and sustained in the present day.
PATHWAYS TO IMPACT:
- The Development Action Group did research on existing medium density housing and financing opportunities.
- DAG worked with local and provincial government to educate them about domestic and international best practice.
- We advocated for new strategies around housing finance and land value capture.
- We worked with developers to build medium-density housing as a showcase for what's possible.
